Masque Alfresco presents: Men and Women in the Dark written by Benedict Herrman and Rian Turner, directed by Fayra Teeters as part of 2013 Fertile Ground.

The play reveals and revels in our differences as well as our commonalities, recognizing that while we cause each other much pain, we also bring each other much joy, and that to be human means to experience both.

Men and women have been trying to figure each other out for millennia, to the point where scientists have resorted to brain scans. There have been endless TV shows, books, films, articles, websites, etc., that examine our differences, but we are still left with a basic lack of understanding as to who ‘they’ are. The truth is, that men and women are still very much in the dark about each other, and despite the wealth of knowledge about our different brain patterns, different ‘languages,’ and the humorous possibilities of those differences, we still struggle to understand and live with each other.

This play isn’t about solving the mystery, but about celebrating it at a slightly tilted angle, perhaps in order to get a better view. It is ironic that, though we may be in the dark about each other, our greatest intimacy also comes in the darkness, through moments of deep surrender to one another. It is my hope that we can come to realize that though we can bring each other great pain, we can also bring each other great joy. Perhaps through accepting our differences, even loving and respecting those differences, we can become more fully human.
